This one is an austere, no gimmicks, no bullshit, no show off flash – vibraphone improvisation. It’s the right instrument done the right way. I’d be comfortable calling this third stream jazz just based off of the instrument and the fact that it’s improvised but musically, to my ears, it falls into two camps. The first is a few generations after Schoenberg around the 1940’s where things still sounded 12 toney but the artists were branching out of the laws of Schoenberg’s musical universe. The other is Cagian. But not the chaotic full random cage but rather his more subdued dreamy far less alarming stuff.
For my money, there’s not enough of this style of music being performed or recorded on vibraphones. It’s strange because it’s the perfect instrument for the format. Redman does a fantastic job of stepping up to this important musical challenge. This is an outstanding addition for the genre and instrument.
