Genre: Country Vapor

Rating: 5/5

released on bandcamp December 11, 2021

As far as I know, GMRadioX is the lead pioneer on realizing this idea of making vaporized country music. It’s surprising really considering that for the most part the oldest recorded music dates back to 1927 and the Bristol Sessions, the most important event in the history of the genre is the most landmark recording of that year. And even as we are only half a decade off the first centennial of this compilation it’s important to contextualize the time and place of Bristol, Tennessee, 1927. It’s nine years after the end of World War One. Even today, over a hundred years later, the widespread use of chemical weapons makes WWI arguably the most grotesque exploitation of the Industrial Age in human history.

My point is, country music has always been pining for a simpler and purer past that probably never existed. And vapor is warped nostalgia. The ghosts of memories that never really were. The genres fit together like a hand in a glove.

GMRadioX is unabashed about using famous samples. It’s a classic debut, at least I think it’s a debut, that shows the huge potential of the idea.

If you like this album I have a couple recommendations. They’re not vapor country but they use original folk / country music in a new age / ambient setting to create a related ambiance.

1) Country Tropics by Old Saw

2) Natural Imperfections by Bernie Krause and Country Joe McDonald
