Stop me if you’ve heard this one before. A man auditions for the circus by flapping his arms fast enough to take flight and the ring master complains that all he can do is bird imitations.
This record is undeniably a Coltrane imitation. From the Van Gelder Studio to the art to the song titles to everything about the sound and even that it was recorded on Coltrane’s birthday.
This isn’t like Nat Birchall https://birdboyblizzard.music.blog/2021/09/30/ancient-africa-by-nat-birchall/ that is deeply influenced by Coltrane. This is straight up imitation/recreation, done really fucking well. Some people might wonder if recreating Coltrane should even be a thing. Could it be a genre onto itself. My answer is hell yes. Five decades after his death we still haven’t come up with anything better and I don’t think we ever will. If you can’t climb higher than the top of the mountain you have to stand on the mountain top. Coltrane wasn’t a mountain climber. He was the mountain.
