Dummy by Portishead obviously made a big splash. Numbers don’t lie. And although the glory was, of course, shared with Tricky there’s still pretty much no way to overstate how important Dummy is to the evolution of hip hop – outside the genre. Like, it’s trip hop, not hip hop. In terms of what C Y G N achieves with this trilogy – numbers or no I don’t give a fuck – this is chill hop’s Dummy. This is a five star revolution.

These are the sounds of a messenger. Distant. Primitive. Inspirational. Now. And Futuristic.

This is music that will remain a part of our cultural consciousness. If it chill hop is fragmented into hundreds of digital releases this is half.
