Clocking in at around 8 minutes this has all the charm as a full LP condensed into all you need to get everything it has to offer and if you want more listen to it again. Tagged as “grindcore” it actually has a slower devil may care sludginess that I do associate with certain bands that were described as such in the late eighties and early nineties. Specifically, I’m referring to Kilslug, UpsideDown Cross, and Sore Throat- all of which were blazing pioneers and should be known by anyone who cares about knowing metal and punk history.
On this recording, the charm and the effectiveness comes from the bold but endearingly sloppy tempo changes and the overall lack of concern for technical precision. There’s no false dichotomy of wildness and symphonic skill here. Perhaps, with metal everything under the sun has been done. Or maybe not. It wasn’t that long ago that new insane approaches were freaking me out but honestly it’s been a few years. But if I am going to metal out I want something that’s rough and free and that’s what this record offers with its crusty metal hooks.
