This just isn’t the direction I want this band to move in. Their music is much more potent stripped down. The production on this doesn’t make any sense in relation to the band’s strengths. They’re no Lambchop but they started with the potential to be on that level. On their 2018 release The Waves, the Wake they started moving in the wrong direction with the overproduction but they corrected it by releasing an acoustic version. The songwriting for a band like this usually hangs its hat on effective sentimentality. It’s hard to hear if that power is hidden under the production. I guess if it was it would show.
