Like I’m sure a lot of people who grew up enjoying a few Jethro Tull albums are, I’ve been fairly ambivalent about following their career. When I was in high school I had Aqualung, Heavy Horses, and, my favorite, Thick as a Brick. Since then I’ve gotten two know a few more. There’s so much new music to listen to and old stuff I still need to hear plus keeping in touch with old friends it’s hard to make time. I also curmudgeonly went into this with a negative mindset which is certainly unfair since I like everything I’ve heard by Ian Anderson. Well, it turns out this is a lot better than I expected. He sticks to the formula but it doesn’t come across as formulaic. The songs sound sincere and fresh. I really shouldn’t be surprised since a lot of musicians are now churning out good stuff into their 80’s and Anderson is a spritely 75. If you’re a fan, I recommend this, and if not it’s still probably best to start with something older.
