Rating: Good for Fans of the Genre
Even die hard fans of ambient music will probably enjoy this record as a one off. It’s a good one off and worth taking the time for a listen but beyond that it’s probably not going to make its way into rotation. The positives are the field recording element is interesting and the synth and looping is pleasant. Also, you haven’t heard it before so there will be some sense of freshness and novelty for one or two listens. The limitation isn’t in the music itself but just that there’s a sea of music that sounds like this already.
I think it would be better if the loops transformed and retextualized and gradually modified the melodic structure and so on. And more could be done with the field recordings. The real nature sounds could be manufactured and looped and echoed as well. Plus, at this point, the total absence of acoustic instruments is a bit of a red flag. Basically, it’s good, but I wish there were more. This kind of minimalism was very potent around 2010, but, like I said earlier, there’s just so much of it now.
