Spiritual Jazz
released may 5 2023
Lovano (sax) and Crispell (piano) are both in their 70’s and Castaldi (percussion) graduated Berklee in the seventies so he’s gotta be up there, too. Lovano is taking the lead here but Crispell is a actually quite considerably superior as a jazz musician and it’s her presence that makes this a five star masterpiece. She’s the one that brings the next level angular beauty. Lovano does give her gorgeous compositions to work with, however. The atmosphere is all the more ethereal with sparse percussion and no bass. Lovano hangs out mostly in the realm of modal jazz while Crispell compliments him in the tradition of Schoenberg and his followers. Lovano really shines on One for Charlie which I assume is a tribute to Charlie Haden. If my guess is off feel free to correct me in the comments. He also works without Crispell on Rhythm spirit. Both tracks are fantastic. Anyway, the primary things I want to emphasize in this review is that these musicians are still at the top of their games and that this is a gorgeous and timeless jazz record.
