Morris decides to play bass instead of guitar on the third recording he appears on so far in 2023. I copy and paste the names of the recordings from the bandcamp page but I figure it’s actually supposed to be Pre-Exist /Joe Morris/Raf Vertessen/Will Greene like it says on the cover art. Musicians are going to do what they want to do and the ease of flooding your discography seems to be the go to move in the more is more digital age. Morris is a brilliant extraordinarily talented guitarist which makes me wonder what the point of this release is. Yes, it’s a competent free jazz record (although no mention of jazz is made in the tags – my assumption is that the word “improvised” is less confining in certain jazz artists’ minds) but it’s in such a gigantic sea of competent free jazz records. There’s no way it’s getting less than three stars but to be honest three star jazz records don’t go into rotation. Maybe it doesn’t matter anymore but even though there are redeeming qualities to this recording it probably belongs left in the vault. Non-curated discographies are becoming a nuisance to jazz fans.
