Progressive Dark Ambient Fusion

One of the most fortunate things I’ve yet to learn about Covid is it got Lombardo the fuck away from overrated assclown Mike Patton. Instead of rotting in bed binge watching crap TV Lombardo made the best music he’s ever recorded outside of Slayer. I know you know, but I want to make this blog educational for everyone so I’m mentioning that he’s the drummer on the greatest thrash metal album of all time, Reign in Blood. Unfortunately, he’s spent too much of his time with Patton and another wildly overrated musical buffoon, John Zorn.
As far as I can tell from the credits, all sounds on this record are created by Lombardo but it is NOT a solo percussion album. There’s lots of dark ambient style texturing throughout. His son is credited with production and whether or not that means he added the often film score sounding background or not I don’t know.
In general, I prefer purity, and I might enjoy this excellent album even more if it really was just percussion. I don’t need the extra guidance. But on the other hand, it’s done well enough and isn’t distracting. And from a dark ambient standpoint it’s a progression of a genre that’s gone stagnant and tends to fail miserably with electronic percussion.
Hopefully, Lombardo will continue to explore this path instead of wasting his time with musical frauds.
