Andrei Krylov’s album “Medieval Bard Fantasy Songs” takes listeners on a captivating musical journey with the haunting melodies of the gothic lute, classical guitae, and the ethereal tones of the Celtic violin, Krylov composes with a sense of purity that sometimes captures the sound I associate with the early renaissance but occasionally he’s slightly less austere like on “Celtic highland guitar dance fantasy” with, while definitely maintaining a sense of the tradition also sort of comes across like a mix of William Ackerman and Jimmy Page (or Bert Jansch).
From the very first note on German Gothic Castle Toccata, it’s evident that Krylov is a master of his craft. His skillful playing on the gothic lute sets the tone for the entire album, evoking a sense of mystery and intrigue. The deep resonance of the instrument resonates with the listener’s soul, transporting them to a bygone era.
Complementing the lute, the Celtic violin adds an enchanting layer. Its mournful melodies and spirited flourishes tug at the heartstrings, conveying a range of emotions from love and joy to sorrow and longing. The interplay between the lute and the violin creates a harmonious balance, enhancing the overall musical experience. The arrangements are well-crafted, striking a delicate balance between simplicity and complexity. “Medieval Bard Fantasy Songs” is a true testament to Andrei Krylov’s artistry and passion for medieval music.
