Conway hasn’t missed a beat or taken an artistic misstep that I’m aware of. I like this and the whole Griselda Buffalo, New York thing. They’re the new Wu but this album leans more into Ye than RZA. The track Kanye pays homage to him both with the spiritual lyrical content and the gospel backdrop. It’s a beautiful moving song and a healthy reminder that it’s 23 not 93. Conway credentials run so deep at this point that he can afford any sort of sincerity. He’s at liberty to knock it down however he wants. Maybe he always has.
On Flesh Off My Flesh he states, “I’m DMX reincarnated.” DMX was in fact a fan and Conway definitely carries a similar grit.
This is not his best album but it feels like he’s building to a magnum opus. He’s great but he’s not getting any younger either. Griselda, collectively, is a crucially important part of hip hop history but it still feels like there’s some unfilled potential, like a top 20 all time hip hop album. I know he works non-stop but maybe it’s a matter of slowing down and nailing everything making every second a sonically rich deep musical treasure. Quality over quantity. We’ll see what the future holds.
