“The world turned on you so it’s fuck the world
You truly see the ugliness in people now
People that was wishin you well and now shittin on yo name and tellin you you should kill yourself
The shit is dark, cause they proud about it
And if you did it, they would wear your suicide like a badge of honor
They don’t care about your wife or your son and daughter”

The follow up to To Kill a Sunset isn’t necessarily more sunny. I’m in a small minority saying this but since ADHD I think Kendrick has been mostly disappointing. Stay with me here, I know who I’m reviewing. Maybe someone else remembers when Kendrick went from saying he wouldn’t vote to reeling that back in. It’s fine to grow but I felt a selling out to mainstream sensibilities. Well, Kota, to me, is who Kendrick pretends to be. The real deal.

Statik Selektah is white dude who has worked with Paul Wall and Slick Rick. The production is smooth and soulful and minimalistic by hip hop standards.

I really like Kota. He frequently mentions his travels in Asia. I’ve traveled a lot in Asia as well so it’s relatable. He also just comes off as friendly, like his name says, and sincere. Hip hop is the hardest genre to separate the art from the artist. It’s so intensely personal. Hip hop fans have the difficult situation of letting a lot of negative characters putting a lot of negative energy into their innerness. Kota offers a kind alternative.
