Almost all the dungeon synth I listen to, which incidentally has been quite a bit recently, would rank three stars. It’s a genre that seems to attract talented people. Rarely, do they sink to the level of two stars or, if I’m being honest, rise to four. Hole Dweller is a special restrained talent. The extra notes to become prog are always right there but they stick to the ethic hanging their hat on song structure rather than showmanship. The songs either have that special feeling or they don’t and on this record they all do. It’s an optimistic spring like musical universe with occasional glimpses of triumph but never getting too carried away with grand finale-ism or pointless crescendo. Sounds basic maybe but it’s a hard thing to pull off. The effect is something like a hearty constitutional following a nice plant based meal.
