Wow! What an unexpected gem seeming sent from the heavens. One of the first things I want to mention is that this was recorded by Radwan Ghazi Moumneh of the fantastic Jerusalem In My Heart. If you’re unfamiliar with this band I recommend their entire discography starting with If He Dies, If If If If If If

but back to this one, I’m going to say it’s a descendant of the style of Don Cherry although some of Aaron Leaney playing reminds me of the circular breathing style of Colin Stetson and some of the angularity brings to mind Roscoe Mitchell. There is nothing about this I don’t love and I am so glad this was recorded. Thouin is 83 years old and has been kicking around the Montreal jazz scene for some while and is a founder of Quatuor de Jazz libre du Québec What an incredible world. So much happening. This is such an exciting release with beautiful textures of sound from all kinds of instruments. These two are a free jazz symphony.
