Works of Progress and Etudes is made up of very purposeful compositions that remind me of the early works of Schoenberg. There are many composers I could compare this to and it might seem like a later electronic composer would make more sense but I’m talking about how the sequence of vibrational pulses compliment the piano. There’s nothing collage like here. The songs move through time as if they are telling a story. Think Elliott Carter not John Cage. The music evokes the feeling of moving from the umbilical cautiously anticipating danger but ultimately confident and curious. By balancing the emotional impact of these compositions Lynch avoids both cliches and ambiguity.
