I have a lot of respect for 4AD and releases like this comfort me that they’re still a place you can find strong quality control on their releases. Usually, I don’t bother reviewing music that has this much web presence already. Usually popular music drives less traffic to this blog than obscure stuff. Recently, though I’ve been getting more traffic through search engines and not just links from artists Facebooks and BandCamps so maybe it’s time to branch more into artists that are likely to ignore me and hope their fans take an interest.
I haven’t read any of the other reviews and this is the first I’ve heard of this band. It ‘s mostly of the sound what’s now called Yacht Rock. The song writing and the production reminds me a lot of Steely Dan and the Doobie Brothers. It’s glossy high fidelity smooth music. I can definitely picture this on at a Manhattan dinner party I’d never get invited to because I don’t use deodorant. It definitely isn’t offensive. Nor is it pretentious. It’s good song writing with a superb vocalist. If you like the band Drug Dealer I think you’ll like this as well.
