Ciphers seems to me to be a serious sonic attempt to accelerate spiking neural activity by emulating synthetic means. This definitely isn’t fuck you eat shit noise; this is calculated measured sound art that is demanding but ultimately pleasantly engaging. Maybe alien medical monitors sound like this. Practical and a matter of fact. Stoic instead of brightly theatrical. Feedback from a neural implant before you’re knocked back into unconsciousness. Sure I’m being flowery but in my defense it’s hard to make the point that this is music with definitive purpose. I can make up shit about what it is that reads like label hype but I don’t fucking know. It’s sterile and mathematical which isn’t usually a compliment outside of a scientific context but here these characteristics are the backbone of an artistic endeavor. In that sense, and hopefully this will put it in a context that means something, it’s like the experimental music version of the aesthetics of Russian realism in literature.
