Glossover sets out to be an intelligent but easy listen and ABR achieves that artistic goal. They borrow heavily from a lot of what’s best in recent musical trends and put together an album that’s sort of like if Lana Del Ray spent a year sitting under an oak tree and listened to a lot of Grouper.
The two main things that ABR can do that’s so rare is write good songs and sing really well. That’s been the recipe since the Renaissance and it still applies. You really don’t need more than that but if you don’t have it and try to compensate in other ways your chances are about the same as germs against a good disinfectant. On Glossover they build on this solid foundation with beautiful textures and production from ambient and field recording traditions. By doing all this they hit a very mellow sweet spot. Not too anything but not bland either. You might listen to this for the same reason you use a candle instead of artificial light. It’s good and adds value to the atmosphere.
