My Review:
Daou’s day job is being an architect. Anecdotally, I’ve concluded that architects make good musicians. Architecture demands functionality and structure. Music by contrast is in my opinion the most ethereal and uniquely abstract artform. Music is where an architect can be truly free.
I’m currently going through all four of his releases and I’m comfortable saying it’s all very worthwhile and really that extends to the entire LONTANO SERIES. 16 bucks for the entire discography is a tempting offer. But to finally get on point, this release is exactly on target for where great ambient needs to be at this point in the trajectory of the genre. The successful use of field recordings is essential because that’s the key to open the door to the realization that ambient sound is everywhere. Artists like Daou hold our hands and guide us to the beauty of ALL sound. He’s our Virgil leading us to a musical enlightenment where we come to the understanding, temporarily, that all sounds have a feeling but we’re deaf to that without the flow of ambient musical waves to amplify the ethereal quality of found sound so we can hear it as it’s meant to be heard. We go from hearing to listening to understanding to finally understanding that hearing is understanding by default. We just need artists like Daou to make it easy to appreciate sound.
