The Great Old Ones is the name Raffaele Pezzella (a.k.a. Sonologyst) uses for his two Lovecraft tributes. I’ll admit the idea of using the author’s work as a theme draws me to these recordings. Sometimes ideas like this will pull you into music you probably would’ve skipped otherwise. And as my rating indicates this is high quality dark ambient. I especially like the use of some percussion that doesn’t become a distraction or attempt to be the heartbeat of the music. One the other hand, although this is really well done, it’s a crowded genre. And I believe it’s also reaching the end of its trajectory, at least in this form. In order to reach the full fives stars this would really need another ingredient. Some kind of sounds that are more startling but don’t push it into another genre like noise. But it’s a subtle listening game and I can respect that.
