Blk Elijah & The Children of Meroë is smooth crossover South African pop jazz fusion that sounds to me as if it’s heavily influenced by both Stevie Wonder and Sade. The music constantly has a lot going on from this seven piece band and Thandi Ntuli proves herself to be an excellent keyboardist and composer. Three vocalists make for some exciting harmonizing and everyone in the band feels essential but no one is getting their toes stepped on. The sound is very lush and rich, like a musical rain forest. Even though this music avoids dissonance it’s not necessarily “easy” music. There’s loads to discover with multiple listens and the effort is it worth it and rewarding.
