Nduduzo Makhathini is a South African jazz musician. I searched through the musicians on this release using discogs and didn’t discover much. The music is kind of in a spiritual jazz style popularized in the 1960’s. I don’t know if it’s the flavor of 21st century multiculturalism but this doesn’t have, to my ears, a strong African flavor. But on the other hand you can’t be any more African than actually African so who am I to say. But if you’re looking for the next Fela Kuti you’re not going to find it here and you’re in the wrong country. I guess I’m saying this sounds very Western to me. Perhaps I’m being touristy but I feel like a stronger African vibe would spice this album up a bit. The vocals do do that to a degree. This is very good jazz but there’s so much goodness and super high quality in jazz these days I think most people will find this good for a solid listen but maybe not so many returns. The Coltrane influenced Senze’ Nina is the stand out track.
