If you like solo piano and are looking for some pretty straightforward jazz this is a good record to check out. And I’m not saying this is the type of jazz that lacks an adventurous spirit. It’s not that at all. Thomas very competently navigates his way through avant-garde passages and back to styles that are rooted in older styles but still done in a contemporary way. It’s kind of an odd thing, recordings like this that are just jazz. It’s not bop, it’s not cool, he doesn’t try very hard to swing, definitely not nu or smooth. It’s just jazz. Maybe ECM started it but even then I’ll write something like “It has that certain ECM sound”. This isn’t even that. It’s just plain old jazz – 2022 style.
