I think if all the jazz gods in the late sixties could hear what we got going on today it would blow their minds. I know as a “critc” (although I like to point out I’m really just fan) there’s some responsibility to help the reader separate the wheat from the chaff. Otherwise, there’s no point. Well, for starters I almost always get to that before I start writing. I don’t fuck around much reviewing shit I don’t like, or love. And it’s the latter with this one. Wheaties motherfucker!
Jaimie Branch, RIP, threw the word punk at this, as a compliment, but it’s very much jazz. It’s not any sort of fusion. The intensity level is really high though and that’s what she was getting at. This is a great jazz record. Suddenly, 2022 is hopping!
