No other genre brings home how talented a person can be and still go unrecognized. Nerd creates a brilliant album in his bedroom and no one cares. Then bandcamp comes along and a few people care. A community forms on social media. It’s small but at least it’s something. Unfortunately for Matthew Davis, the real name of the composer, he died in 2011 so sadly he won’t get to see the appreciation grow.
The name of this album and artist doesn’t suggest any optimism and it certainly carries a heavy dose of goth. Some of it, if played on distorted guitars would be cool metal and others land somewhere in the gloomier corners in 1980’s new wave / post punk. The songs are well-crafted and he can sing. This is certainly a lost gem if ever there was one.
