I think of myself as someone who really likes Ackerman but considering all he’s done I’ve really done a shit job of following his career. Hell, he founded Windham Hill Records. In a way, he’s comparable to Greg Ginn once you put away your swords. But like a lot of others I’m sure, when I feel like hearing him do his thing it’s been In Search of the Turtle’s Navel time and time again. Which is a good thing about this blog. Doing this gives me a reason to branch out. Positano Songs has the same delightful crisp and melodically clever guitar playing as Turtle so when I’m in the mood I’ll move through his discography. I doubt he ever matched The Bricklayer’s Beautiful Daughter but who can say if you haven’t put ears on the material. He’s in his 70’s but my jazz heros have proven to me great releases are still possible for well after that. I hope Ackerman does whatever he wants and enjoys himself. He’s a pioneer. And if this record is any indication, he stays in his lane. Really digging this. 🕯
