This is an exciting record on the fabulous Clean Feed label that features an ensemble of twelve musicians from Europe and Mali performing original compositions by French pianist, Eve Risser. Of course, Mali has a great musical tradition and have several artists that have made wonderful contributions to the world of jazz and blues bringing its distinct West African flair to the fold. Risser taps into this resource with deft skill. Some people might not like this comment but the music on here has an ECM feel. I might be wrong but I tend to associate Clean Feed with rougher edges. But this has a more polished production. I think both approaches have equal value so it’s just an observation not a judgment. These are very intricate compositions and the musicians show a lot deference and taste looking toward a well constructed finished product over dives into the avant garde. Nobody is trying to knock you over the head with this one.
