Stipple is an excellent ambient release that leans heavily on acoustic instruments and borrows from the genre of music known as glitch. It’s been a minute since I’ve heard a new glitch release but it’s a genre I’m fond of and when it kind of faded away (at least in my reality) it seemed to had become unnecessarily trapped in an artistic dead end. I felt like it needed a creative force to bridge the genre or create something new. Knobs has successfully achieved this objective on Stipple and it’s bound to be one of the better autumn releases of 2022.

The mastermind of this project is a cat known as Scott Harper. Not to be confused with the film score composer and cellist of the same name. Harper runs a YouTube channel also called Knobs that’s primarily about guitar pedals if I’m reading it right. If you’re interested, please check it out here:

The additional instrumentation on this album is very important so I’m just going to copy and paste the what’s what here:

Lap steel = Christine Bougie
Cello, Upright bass = Andrew Downing
Wurlitzer = Dafydd Hughes
Clarinet = Julia Hambleton
Accordion, bandoneon = Drew Jurecka
Drums = Joshua Van Tassel

To circle back to where I started to conclude, before I sign off here I want to reiterate that this is really an excellent release and is worth your time as a listener. It’s also available on Spotify.
