If you call it dream punk it’s dream punk but nobody calls anything but dream punk dream punk. It carries the classic hallmarks of slush and trad vapor but there’s an extra expansive quality to it. The grooves open up into something that evokes the feeling of making a positive and utilitarian discovery. It could be a step forward on your journey to perfect mental health or a beautiful view at the top of the next hill. Or even, or maybe especially, a creek or a waterfall on the same trek.
I still love ambient music even when it’s formulaic as most of the releases now are. But this is the natural next artistic wave from excellent ambient music into something adventurous but not upsetting the meditative vibe.
As a music critic, I want to avoid simply describing the genre and focus on the release specifically. With that in mind I want to point out that this is a recording that makes these expansions extraordinarily well.
