Two tracks by this avant garde duo. Sounds like a spelunking expedition in Lee Ranaldo lock grooves. Neither musician seems to have any desire to show off. They just hop into very peculiar patterns and slowly warp and bend what starts out warped and bent, in the bowels of microtonality, the notes between the notes and bizarre hidden melodies in the musically microscopic. The second track, Designated Origins, unfolds into something that reminds me of the great Penderecki but as if the sounds have been hiding in a nuclear fallout shelter and came out crippled and lame and eyes spent and burning from the sunlight. The drones veritably transform how the patterns of notes communicate. Everything about this feels like it’s about the music and not the musicians. They have something to create and they apparently have washed themselves free of ego and any sort of popular influence and destructive tendencies. This is not noise and it is not harsh. It’s probably too difficult or even impossible for most listeners but make no mistake; this is something you’re supposed to know.
