This is a single 14 minute track of music grown mostly out of the beatless industrial noise tradition but filtered through a drone lens. It’s not so harsh that it leaves the impression that Pestilent Rain only wants to clobber you with noise. Nor is it as singular as most drone. PR allows the sound to develop, grow, and change gears. It’s also too full of rough edges to sit comfortably with most dark ambient releases. That is to say PR are doing their own thing that doesn’t sit easily in any currently trending niches. Instead, it does what good experimental music is supposed to do, it plants its own flag.
Throughout almost the entire track the sound is like a foreboding apocalyptic wind. Then abruptly there’s some kind of sonic attack pushing a harsh noise position. But instead of making the new abrasiveness a starting point for the next chapter the track abruptly ends. The feeling is like you’re walking through some kind of empty wasteland when suddenly you’re attacked and killed.
The album cover suggests an internal struggle rather than a fight with aggressive outside forces so perhaps it could be thought of as a sonic representation of a depressive episode ending in a suicide.
