I’m more inclined to call this soul jazz than spiritual jazz. Kahil El’Zabar takes a laid back everything is gonna be alright approach to the sound. His voice and his style suggest impenetrable defenses. He’s going to be who he is and do what he does and all the bullshit we’re all drowning in doesn’t make a bit of difference. It’s that undying indomitable spirit some people have. They’re anchors. And this is a musical anchor or lifeline, whichever you need.
Healing.
Makes you think of Coltrane and Ayler. Shepp. But it’s not of that time. And it’s too self-assured for mimicry.
Corey Wilkes who you may have heard while listening to the brilliant Exploding Star Orchestra or jamming with fellow Chicagoan Roscoe Mitchell on Song for my Sister. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟! Plays trumpet.
Justin Dillard plays keys and in my opinion he plays the most pivotal role in terms of keeping the flow and keeping things moving. He lays down some super cool African sounding hooks that match the heavy percussion on the record.
Isaiah Collier, whose credits include recording with the super powerful Angel Bat Dawid, plays reeds; which is no small duty seeing how the album includes a take on Coltrane’s Resolution.
The album concludes with one of the greatest standards of all time. Summertime. Right off the bat on two or three listens this is already one of my top five versions.
