Genre: Free Jazz

Rating: 5/5

All these musicians are brand new to me which makes it all the more surprising how great this is. This is composed third stream Jazz borrowing from less austere interpretations of Schoenberg serialism. I’m thinking like 1940’s Elliott Carter. I mean, I can’t say for sure what was in Hauptmann’s mind but that’s what it sounds like to me.

A lot of the new stuff I’ve heard over the last couple of years that marries the compositional style of contemporary classical with jazz just sounds goofy and silly. It sounds like they still don’t know how to express themselves without key signatures so they turn to childish antics. This on the other hand is beautifully expressive and captures the essence of the best of the twentieth century and avant garde jazz.
