Standing out in the world of heavy metal is an incredibly difficult task. Metal is the most durable and international genre of music since Tony Iommi cut off his fingertips. Metal is the tardigrade of music. Metal can be good simply by ticking off the boxes but ticking off the boxes is easier said than done. The minimum degree of competence and dexterity is set at an extremely high bar. But to be very good, like this is, there has to be something more. Sometimes you might be able to put your finger on it but usually it’s intangible and even ineffable.
Key signature and tempo changes that somehow make sense and keep the flow. No amount music theory can teach this. I also think it’s usually better when develops organically from the band as a whole rather than being the brain child of a single individual. The latter often (but not always) ends up sounding an idea that pulls the listener away from the music to look at the idea or the concept as a listener. It’s better to sound like a natural process. The listener should be lost in the music not thinking about the music from an intellectual distance.
Even if its complexity is nerdy you should be metaling out not nerding out. These are grooves that you just metal out to like you’re supposed to.
I’m not sure if it’s intentional but this recording has very little high end. I might like it a touch more if the sound was a little brighter but that very well may be the opposite of what the band was going for. Either way, this is a very good metal release. Hard hitting brutal with an intense unbreakable flow.
