Dysphoria is an abstract dissonant electronic release that’s dark ambient, drone, and noise adjacent but doesn’t fit comfortably into any of these categories. In her bandcamp notes she mentions an intense relationship with the sea. Like Thomas, at the time of this recording at least, I too live close to the sea. Often music that evokes the sea focuses on predictable meditative waves, which is fine. But if you really know anything about large bodies of water you also know that the sea can be a hideous bitch of thing. For the most part it seems to be the chaotic brute violent unfightable force of the sea that’s being written about. However, in my opinion, the fourth track, Framing the Ocean Waves, is the best piece on the record. At a little after the two minute mark it comes in with a really surprising beautiful hook that feels like a peace offering with both the sea and the self. Like a recognition that all that wildernesses in the vastness of the sea is also a part of who we are and that’s not only ok; it’s beautiful.
