This recorded is bookended with what I’m assuming are intentionally kitschy skits involving telephone humor. Humor in music is tricky business. TAS does it well, though. It’s not going to have you in stitches but it’s incorporated into the music wisely in a way that works with the avant-garde esthetic. Perhaps there’s a Harry Partch influence. Other ballpark artists include Negativland and Stock, Hausen & Walkman .
Beyond the humor the sounds TAS create on this record are at time ferocious and genuinely frightening. It would be tempting to go with that but there are so many dark ambient releases now that going that route, even if you stand above the pack, which this certainly would, you’re still just pissing in the ocean.
Ultimately, this is unique, clever, and powerful avant-garde music.
