I can get why they don’t list “free jazz” in their bandcamp tags. For me, it’s basically a matter of if I can see this as having grown out of Ornette’s tradition or not. I think it did. The second of the two tracks being more traditionally experimental than the first.
This sound is still the vanguard of the limits of tonality or atonality depending on how you look at it. We’ve been here, not in a dead end as some critics claimed, but here on this peak, this mountaintop, looking out at the view of the musical landscape for some time now. Doing it correctly, with the right amount of sonic aggression, not softened but not unrestrained either. Nothing takes more discipline than being free. These are the sentinels.
