This is modal era Coltrane influenced jazz from Tel Aviv. It’s spiced with just a touch of Middle Eastern and North African influences to keep it from becoming dull and lazy and perhaps therefore careless. I’m not saying it couldn’t stand on just the Western tradition. It would still be good and if it wasn’t there I probably wouldn’t be asking why not. But with it, the listener can hear that it’s cultural groundedness that puts the winds in these musical sails. This is music that rests on the quality of the compositions as it’s never showy with extravagant solos or deep dives into dissonance. Fortunately for the quintet, the compositions are quite good.
