Visually he’s kind of got a Kaepernick type of thing going on. I like the image. Free and cool. Richie Havens perhaps. But am I going to be feeling Max Roach or Art Blakey here? Well… not exactly but maybe I should be asking myself why I’m asking myself. The tracks are brief and definitely unique. There’s peculiar sound swells, exotic beats, brief spoken word blurbs… what I like about it is how distinctly his he makes it. It doesn’t try to hard to be world (to use a perhaps dated term) but he doesn’t hide from the gamelan or west African roots either. The brevity of the tracks almost has a Robert Pollard quality to it and from my perspective that’s a huge compliment.
