Recorded in the train stations of Buenos Aries this is well organized to create an ambient feel. It’s good. And 3/5 is a good rating but Calarco’s approach is little to minimalist for my taste. insects are by Masayuki Imanishi an earlier 2021 release also on Unfathomless records that I reviewed here: https://birdboyblizzard.music.blog/2021/04/25/insects-are-by-masayuki-imanishi/ and can be listened to here: https://unfathomless.bandcamp.com/album/insects-are is an example where I feel like the artist brings a little more sauce to the process. Another one I really love is Legends of American Theatre by Vanessa Rossetto here: https://birdboyblizzard.music.blog/2021/07/24/legends-of-american-theatre-by-vanessa-rossetto/amp/?__twitter_impression=true and here: https://regionalbears.bandcamp.com/album/legends-of-american-theatre I’m trying to work out an interview with Rossetto but she stopped responding to my questions. I want write a piece on an earlier recording of hers with her input. We’ll see if it ever gets done. Anyway, maybe it’s my lack of understanding of Calarco’s approach but to me it runs dangerously close to Screwston DJ’s who ONLY slow it down or vaporwavers who ONLY sample. And in deference to that style sometimes it really works well and then, you know, fuck the process, if I like it or love it then I’m singing the praises. And this is good and interesting music. It just doesn’t hang with my favorites of the year.
