Definitely a group of top shelf musicians here on this EP of little less than 25 minutes. Obviously, this could be stretched out, no doubt these musicians could solo and still keep you captivated for twice the length but instead the music is intensely economical. The mission is clearly the songs not the egos. And the band is outstanding transitioning from the tradition of spiritual jazz from the sixties and seventies to nu jazz and to what I think of as big city FM radio jazz r(whatever that’s called and if that’s even still a thing). There are lots of current jazz releases to choose from and the last five years or so have been like a new renaissance golden age of jazz, believe it or not. I usually like a little more dissonance and atonality with my jazz but there’s a time and a place for everything. If you’re looking for some excellent jazz that doesn’t swim in the cacophonous waters of the avant garde I highly recommend this one.
