Four accomplished jazz musicians interpret a composition by Wilbert De Joode for solo improvisations. Wilbert De Joode, who doesn’t actually perform on this record is generally known for his bass playing. Those interested in hearing more of his playing may want to check out Collected Fiction from 2009 where he plays with Ken Vandermark and others.
The first interpretation is performed by Kaja Draksler. It comes out of the Schoenberg tradition and it’s either a prepared piano or there were some electronics used. Draksler has been keeping very good company and collaborated with the brilliant Susana Santos Silva on a recording of duets for Clean Feed called This Love. Up next is John Dikeman who takes a Cagian literal interpretation of the title and let’s the audience do the work. Dikeman, can also be heard playing with Hamid Drake and the legendary William Parker on Cleaning the Mirror.
Third is Ada Rave on tenor. Rave joined her contemporary on this record, Draksler, on another but more recent collaboration with Silva – the 2021 Melt by Hearth, which one of the best jazz releases so far this year.
Finally, Oscar Jan Hoogland accompanies vinyl pops on piano. At first, I thought he might be playing in front of a mellow fire. Read the raves about a previous record he played on, Summing, from The Quietus: “If ever a record deserved to be heard in its own time, it’s this one.” https://thequietus.com/articles/27974-zea-oscar-jan-hoogland-summing-review
I hope you can forgive me for devoting so much time to the artists’ resumes and where else you might want to look for their music. This recording shouldn’t be ignored. It’s great and it’s great that it showcases these artists free and clear with so little restriction. This is a treasure.
