The way I digested this record I’m taking it as jazz in the tradition of In a Silent Way. The sound is soft and thick. It also, and this is reflected by the cover art as well, this is not music of illusion. I really want to try to explain that so it doesn’t come off as esoteric bullshit. Like there’s space ambient, Hearts of Space and all that and I love that stuff. But science fiction is still fiction. There’s nothing wrong with that. It’s crucially important to our cultural pantheon. But, and again I feel bad using the conjunction but, but, this is music of the earth. The ground, the soil, the rocks, the tangible and the real. So that’s what I mean by this is not music of illusion. This is hardwired into nature. It’s also precise, focused, and disciplined. In other words a real musician is presenting this to you on solid musical ground. Even as it explodes into the traditions of the musique concrete, to me that’s another branch of third stream jazz. And something yet to be fully explored which makes Bertucci a pioneer. Such beautiful flowers and rich soil in the ambient jazz garden!
