I listened to this outside, in a light drizzle nighttime Florida electric storm and damn if that isn’t the right setting for this amazing collection of sounds and words.
This is the best thing I’ve heard this month and sure to be on my year end AOTY list.
99 times out of 100 spoken word just doesn’t work but Weathers quilts his language with an avoidance of the grandiloquent- auto tuned into monotone – growing plantlike in the field recordings. It works within a tradition from the late twentieth century building on a legacy mixed with brilliance and abandonment. Don’t expect this to be on the golden oldies in 2030 but if it’s still up and streaming I’ll still be carrying a torch. I figure some of my favorite music is going to die with me and even if death is not deserved it’s still a proper punctuation. This might read like a non-sequitur but if you bother to listen to this record you might see what I’m getting at as the artist is documenting quite a chunk of their life. Like a scrapbook you might find in a water damaged assisted living facility.
