Jeck, who is a top tier twenty-first century composer, worked on dubplates originally created by Coloccia, during the lockdown months of the pandemic. I’m typically more liberal with 5/5 than most music critics (I consider myself a fan, not a critic) so the $64,000 question is how could this be better. Well, I don’t do decimals so it really could’ve been a rounder-upper. The tracks that are more experimental and the tracks with vocals are runaway five star jams. And all the tracks are outstanding; it’s just that the “standard” drone sound has been done so much, in part by people mimicking pioneers like Jeck, that to find that separation in 2021 they’re going to have to give us more. And in the words of Busta Rhymes, “Goddamn. There ain’t no more. Is there?” There is, but it keeps getting harder to find. When I go back and listen it seems like 2007-2010 were the pinnacle of the new drone re-revolution.
