Dave Holland is one of my favorite bassists but for most listeners, in this trio format which also includes drums and and guitar, the ear is going to be naturally drawn toward the guitar. Well, it’s Kevin Eubanks from The Tonight show unfortunately, he sounds like like a guy from The Tonight Show. He’s at his best on the title track where he sounds sort of like an Al Di Meola with too much class to go off but then later in The Village he goes off in a Chicago Blues kind of way and it’s hard not to wish he hadn’t. The trio setting gives him plenty of space to show off but fortunately he chooses to show respect for Holland’s craft instead.
Overall, the record has a pleasant ambiance and a cool retro-eighties sound and vibe.
