Genre: avant-garde
Rating: 5/5
Three improvised compositions with the exception of tape in the third one are entirely cello and bass.
The song titles are very austere and the music is cold, stark, and barren. The deep register of the instruments make for an extraordinary atmosphere and I don’t remember ever hearing a duet record of bass with cello. The excellent choice of instrumentation along with their playing styles and ability to complement each other make this an outstanding listen. I’m not as current with free jazz as I’d like to be this year because so much of it is behind paywalls. Hopefully, now that things are opening back up more musicians can make money touring. Anyway, my point for bringing that up is that this is one of my favorite improvisational records I’ve heard this year and even though I’m quite sure that would hold up either way, there’s, unfortunately, a lot of stuff I haven’t heard. I wish I could afford to live in NYC so I could see these two live.
