To my ears, the standout musicians on this record are Miguel Zenón on alto saxophone and Matt Mitchell on piano. Zenón grew up in Puerto Rico and imo his career highlight is appearing on Not in Our Name by Charlie Haden’s indescribably great and important band Liberation Music Orchestra. Mitchell played on two Tim Berne records both of which also include the band leader on this record Ches Smith on drums.
Path of Seven Colors deftly blends Haitian Vodou vocalizations with jazz that comfortably reaches into free atonal stretches of soloing which results in a very engaging exciting listen.
